Greatest MINDS Events in September 2021

Dear Greatest MINDS Youth Members, Parents, Community Leaders, and Non-Profit Leaders:

What an amazing summer we have had. I am ready for Fall 2021 which brings new possibilities and new challenges as we head into the 2021-2022 academic year. But at Greatest MINDS, we are ready for them all. As we wrestle with COVID-19 and the Delta variant in our city, we have learned so much about implementing in-person and virtual programming over the last year and a half that we are poised to handle anything that comes our way. We are hoping to help our community members and youth get access to the COVID-19 vaccinations to increase the numbers of vaccinated people in the Greatest Boston area especially urban and minority neighborhoods. Check out our summer Greatest MINDS video with some of our student members in action : https://youtu.be/EOIVB8kt4-E

I have enclosed several events and initiatives that we will be starting this year. Please join us and tell your youth members and parents - that we are here to serve you as a mentor and a volunteer during this time.

Also, we are preparing for our Greatest MINDS' Start Studying Program for the academic year starting after October 1, 2021. Greatest MINDS is an organization that works with college students and young professionals to become the next generation of civic leaders through mentoring, volunteering, and participating. Our vision for the 21st century is where skilled, educated Black professionals will take leadership in their communities and careers by supporting students on their road to college and beyond. Our Start Studying Program Initiative provides mentors to a group of high school and middle school students allowing them to learn new technology skills while embracing working and studying together in teams to do homework and classwork assignments. Through our "Start Studying" online and in-person sessions, students will participate in e-mentoring and e-tutoring from highly accomplished African American professionals from their neighborhoods. We work in the Boston neighborhoods of Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan. Our website is www.gminds.org

Our Start Studying Program Initiative provides mentors to a group of high school and middle school students allowing them to learn new technology skills while embracing working and studying together in teams to do homework and classwork assignments. We also provide college students and young professionals as crucial role models especially for African American boys and young men. Through our online and in-person sessions, students will participate in e-mentoring and e-tutoring from highly accomplished African American professionals from their neighborhoods. We will focus on Math, English, History subjects as well as provide educational and recreational activities for Boston students in grades 7 - 12. We will assist students in learning about college prep programs, and summer enrichment programs. We have developed peer-led study groups as well. Our program will also focus on young Black school-age adolescents and teenagers that need role models and individual mentors during this crucial time during the pandemic. This Fall, we plan to hold a year-long academic program on learning as well as the fundamentals of college preparation/civic/community service program for BPS students ages 14 - 19. We are also planning to hold free activities in Nubian Square and throughout the city as well. Social Distancing and Mask will be required in accordance with the city's mandate. Greatest MINDS is a networking organization of educators, activists, entrepreneurs, young professionals, artists, and community members. Our mission is to provide mentorship and guidance to citizens and first-generation college students seeking to become active and successful contributors to civil society by giving them access to college, career, and community networks. We achieve this by promoting intergenerational dialogue through developing programs, forums, initiatives, campaigns, and conferences that highlight the issues of race, socio-economic class, and gender identity in urban cities and on college campuses. Through our collaborative process, we work towards solving these social justice issues by developing a more inclusive economy.
