2026 Greatest MINDS Black History Month Events in Boston

100th Centennial Black History Month Celebration

Boston Black History Month | February 2026

Greatest MINDS invite you to kick off the centennial year of Black History Month with us.

In partnership, we will honor our stories, our contributions, and our resilience through dynamic events, activations, and cultural experiences across Greater Boston. A coalition of Boston organizations is amplifying a shared message of African American excellence, leadership, resilience, and joy. Together, we are collectively documenting Boston’s story during this historic centennial of Black History Month and the nation’s semiquincentennial. At a time marked by division and erasure, we continue to trailblaze — as we always have. Grounded in joy and liberation, let us gather this Black History Month and make history together.

We are proud that Greatest MINDS is contributing and compiling this comprehensive events list in collaboration with our community partners: Everyone 250, Greatest MINDS, Embrace Boston, The Bay State Banner, The City of Boston, The City of Cambridge,  Museum of African American History & many other organizations.

Celebrate Dr. King’s Legacy – Watch the 2026 MLK Day Commemoration Replay in the City of Cambridge. Experience the power and inspiration of this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day Commemoration, hosted by the Cambridge Peace Commission at St. Paul AME Church on Monday, January 19. Centered on the theme “Community Begins With Us,” the program invited reflection, shared responsibility, and collective action. The evening featured a moving keynote address by Roeshana Moore-Evans, soul-stirring musical selections from the Millennium Gospel Choir, and heartfelt reflections honoring Dr. King’s enduring legacy. Through music and spoken word, the commemoration challenged us not only to remember Dr. King’s vision, but to live it — to recognize that community is not something we inherit, but something we actively build together. Watch the full recording, reflect on the message, and recommit to creating a more just and inclusive Cambridge — together. Here is the Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAEtygCvPPM

Promoting Purpose at Harvard Ash Center for

Democratic Governance and Innovation with Don West

Wednesday, February 25th, 2026, from 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

at Harvard Ash Center for Democratic Governance & Innovation

124 Mt Auburn St # 200, Cambridge, MA 02138. RSVP to george.greenidge@gmail.com

"Promoting Purpose," a discussion with renowned Boston photographer Don West on Race, Civil Rights, Democracy & Social Justice.

Portraits of Purpose is a powerful visual chronicle celebrating 127 Boston-based African American leaders and their allies who have advanced the ongoing struggle for freedom and justice in the post-Civil Rights era. This compelling project is the result of a collaboration between renowned Boston photographer Don West and Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Kenneth J. Cooper, with a foreword by best-selling author, Harvard Law School professor, and legal scholar Charles Ogletree Jr.  In a time of deep racial and political division, these stories offer both comfort and inspiration. They uplift those who are weary of oppositional politics and offer hope for unity across lines of race, ethnicity, and class—toward building a better city, nation, and world.

More than 30 years in the making, this collection is as much a testament to Boston’s Black community as it is a tribute to the individuals featured in its pages. The black-and-white portraits—some posed, many candid—capture each subject within the context of their work and activism, often amid the protests, celebrations, and defining moments that have shaped Boston’s recent history.

Join co-moderators George (Chip) Greenidge, Jr., Harvard Ash Center Visiting Fellow & Executive Director of Greatest MINDS Boston, and Gloria Y.A. Ayee, Lecturer in Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School, & Senior Fellow at the Ash Center, in a lunchtime discussion on promoting purpose, civil rights, democracy, and social justice. Lunch will be served.

Portraits of Purpose is not just a book of photographs—it is a living archive of conscience, resilience, and hope.
